Original Photograph of Daniel Waldo, the most widely known and one of the Oldest Surviving (at the time of this photo) Revolutionary War Veterans, Fine.
This original CDV photo of Daniel Waldo (1762-1864) is mounted on a larger page of white card stock measuring 5.25" x 7.65" with a printed ornate Federal Eagle with shield, arrows, and wreath below. This CDV photo measures 2.15" by 3.25" and is an original photo that was taken in early 1860s. This page and image were taken from a book written about the last living soldiers of the Revolutionary War. There were only a few subjects and images in that book and when found complete, has sold for upwards of $8,000 at auction. The overall quality of the image is quite nice though there is some light rub, dampstaining, and age tone spots to the larger sheet. Accompanying this photo are 8 pages of historic information on Waldo.
Born in 1762 in Windham, Ct. the 9th of 13 children to Zaccheus & Tabitha Waldo. He was drafted at age 16 to serve for a month at New London, CT and enlisted for a further 8 months to serve CT. In March of 1779 he was captured by surprise by some Tories at Horseneck (made famous by General Putnam's escape). He was made prisoner at the "Sugar-House" in New York for about 2 months. When released he went back to work on his farm. He entered Yale University and graduated with honors in 1788 before devoting his life to preaching. In 1885 he became Chaplain of the House of Representatives in Connecticut. He died in 1864 at the age of 101.
