George Washington Memorial
by William Wooley

1800, Large Mezzotint Engraving: "DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF HIS EXCELLENCY GEO. WASHINGTON, ESQR..." by William Wooley, Published by David Longworth, NY, Choice Very Fine.
This was one of the first commemorative prints to reach the market after Washington's death. It was advertised in both the New York Gazette and General Advertiser, January 3, 1800, and was published for subscribers in February of 1800. This large-plate mezzotint, 23" x 18.5", is attached to a mat overleaf, 32" x 26 overall size, and features a large oval portrait of Washington in dark jacket, white cravat, and powdered wig, surrounded by mourning maidens and dark storm clouds. The full caption reads: "This Print, from the Original Picture in the Possession of Longworth and Wheeler Is by them Dedicated to the Memory of His Excellency Geo. Washington, Esqr. / Published at the Shakespeare Gallery, NW Park, N. York," and includes a small funerary urn with a heraldic eagle perched on top of it. Some expert repairs have been made to the caption, top edge, and bottom left side of the print--not affecting the overall appearance of the print itself. An important, desirable example, extremely rare, and well worth the asking price!
