c. 1861, Civil War Era Ferrotype Button, Depicting General Thomas W. Sherman, Choice Very Fine.
This rare, 18 mm, two-part button, features a ferrotype photograph of Thomas W. Sherman in uniform, with the inscription, "Sherman" in a box across the lower part of the photo. The photograph is held in a brass rim. The black, iron back part is uninscribed, with the original loop intact. The image is sharp and clear, with some dark areas in the background. This button is not listed in Albert's catalog of American historical buttons. Tice's "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1861" devotes page 193 to Civil War ferrotype buttons, but does not list them, and illustrates only a few examples, which do not include this one. A rare historical button, and the first we have offered.

After the war, he held posts in Rhode Island and Florida, but retired from active duty in 1870.
