Drawn on the Washington-based bank Riggs & Co., the check is partially printed and then filled in and signed by Dewey. Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War, is the only person in the history of the United States to attain the rank Admiral of the Navy, the senior-most rank in that branch of the service.
