This ¼ plate daguerreotype shows good detail of the locomotive stopped at the crossing, with the engineer posed beside the cab, and another worker to the right of the stack. A sign across the street reads "Rail Road Crossing Look Out For The Engine While The …. ings." Some people stand on a railing at the very right—- the station? A house of the town is at the left. The signs read correctly because this is a copy daguerreotype made by the daguerreotypist (from examination of the plate) with rich detail and clarity. There are some wipes and scratches in the sky. In a fine case with original spine intact. [D3]
After I listed this I was informed by friends that they have in their collection an ambrotype taken a few years later of the same locomotive, now modified, in the same location. We can now read the words on the sign that are covered in the daguerreotype: "While the BELL Rings." There are further details of the building at the right. The ambrotype is reproduced as the 4th scan courtesy the collection of Robert Eckhardt and John Kadel Boring.
