The plates measure 6 ¼" x 4 ½", each in a deep passepartout with gilded inner border, in decorative original frames. The English women are identified on the backing.
A lovely young woman is seated at a table, but we see the full front of her skirt. She holds the cover of a box, and the box itself is prominent on the table. The plate is finely hand-colored, with a landscape backdrop. The cloth of her dress changes wondrously at different angles. This is Miss Mary Jane Day, who died in 1862 at age 47. There’s a light scratch on her face, another, dark, at the left. [D3+]
Her mother, Mrs. Ruth Day, is seen at the same table, holding a small book, probably a prayer book. Her lace shawl is nicely rendered. She outlived her daughter, dying in 1865 at age 85. Green dot at left. [3]
