Tinted French erotic stereodaguerreotype

Luxurious French stereoscopic daguerreotype with hand coloring, sparkling jewels on the woman's bracelet and necklace. The stereo effect is very well realized-- indeed the entire composition is arranged for stereoscopic effect. This chair and curtain appear in other images in this genre. A variant is in "Die Erotische Daguerreotypie; Sammlung Uwe Scheid" p. 79, bottom. A stereoscopic daguerreotype with this chair is attributed to Alexis Gouin/Braquehais in Janet Buerger, "French Daguerreotypes," No. 214. Affixed to the black paper backing is a label from a 1998 Christie's NY auction. The plate is rich and almost pristine, with a tiny scratch at the very top of the right plate and a slight roughness along the very bottom of that plate. [D4]
