Daguerreotype, "WATCHMAN"on his hat. Who??

That's what it says on his hat. He stands at attention, wearing an unusual spotted jacket with tight waist over his formal clothes. This is a fascinating puzzle. Does this have some political or religious significance? Or is it an occupational portrait? If so, there must be some specific function that could be determined, because I would think a typical night watchman wouldn't have this kind of get-up. 1/6 plate daguerreotype in a scalloped mat, full case with leaf and flower design, original spine.
