Author: Duke de la Rochefoucalt Liancourt
Publisher: R. Phillips, etc.
Printing Year: 1800
Number of Volumes: Complete 4 volume set
Notes: Neatly bound in modern gilt embossed library binding, this antique volume is a very scarce example of the English-language edition of Rochefoucalt's important narrative of his exploration of the early United States. While a problematic translation in the eyes of many at the time, it remains the only one in existence. The author traveled overland to Upper Canada, and the second half of this first volume is devoted to his travels there. He aslo describes his travels in New England and his southern tour, which took him to Charleston and Savannah as well as Virginia, where he spent a week with Thomas Jefferson in 1796. A later southern tour took him to the site of the future capitol of Washington. He also describes stays in New Jersey and New York. The work is illustrated with three multi-panel foldout maps depicting the Northern and Southern provinces of the new country, as well as the path of his journeys. The last volume includes several foldout text charts. The volumes show very mild external wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age toned pages that are beautifully typographed and are free of marks, marginalia, or distracting damage. The maps all show nicely with mild scattered age toning, and are solidly attached to the well-preserved volumes. The books measure approximately 5" x 8.5". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50
