3. JOHN PAUL JONES (1747-1792) Continental Navy officer who took the war to the enemy's homeland with daring raids along the British coast and the famous victory of his Bonhomme Richard over HMS Serapis. After the Bonhomme Richard began taking on water and fires broke out on board, the British commander asked Jones if he would strike his flag. Jones replied, "I have not yet begun to fight!" In the end, of course, it was the British commander who surrendered. Very rare signature "Jno. P. Jones" cut from a letter. From an heretofore untouched fifty-year-old collection. Closely-cut at top, very fine.$4,000-5,000
