5. WILLIAM PENN (1644-1718) English Quaker, religious reformer and colonist, a framer of the Pennsylvania Charter of 1677 who received the grant of Pennsylvania from Charles II in 1681. Scarce manuscript D.S. "Wm. Penn", 1p. folio parchment, [England], Apr. 4, 1682, a very early recording of a land sale in Pennsylvania, signed just two years after Penn received his charter from Charles II. This ornate document grants to one Joseph Hall of Congleton a tract of 500 acres in Pennsylvania in exchange for a token payment of five shillings and a final payment of "one pepper corne". Three very light stains in text, two tiny holes at fold junctures, else boldly penned and signed, very good overall. $2,000-3,000
