6. DANIEL MORGAN (1736 - 1802) Revolutionary War officer who, with his famous riflemen played a pivotal role at the victories at Saratoga and Cowpens. Fine content L.S. "Danl. Morgan" 1p. legal folio, "Head Quarters" [Western Pennsylvania], Jan 22, 1795 to John Neville (1731 - 1803), a collector of the Whiskey tax whose home had been destroyed during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Morgan writes in part: "When we consider the violent proceedings which heretofore prevailed...and that by them not only the laws were opposed, but the persons and property of the peaceable [sic] citizen sacrificed...There appears a willingness in the people to enter into voluntary contributions for the purpose of indemnifying those persons who may have sustained damages during the late commotions...[several people] have waited upon me for an estimate of such losses; but not being possessed of information sufficient to ascertain them, have at their request written to you upon the subject. You will therefore please transmit me an estimate of the damages sustained by the several sufferers, that a design so just and praise worthy may be put into execution. As it may so happen that some individuals may not be willing to contribute their share, the above gentlemen wish that the sufferers would impower such persons as may be elected by the people, to bring suits in their ne, and also to nominate their Attorney that prosecutions may be carried on without their [sic] being any expence [sic]." Morgan adds an autograph note on the docket: "You are at liberty to make the contents of this letter public. I think it will answer a good purpose." Heading the Virginia troops in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, Morgan remained in control of the district after the withdrawal of the main army in the fall of 1794. Usual folds with minor splits, stain at bottom does not affect signature, otherwise very good condition.$4,000-6,000
