13. AARON BURR (1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton who he later killed in a duel. A.L.S. "A. Burr" 2pp. 4to., Albany, Sept. 23, 1818, to Martha Bradstreet, in part: "...I reproach myself... for having taxed your sensibility with the story of the burnt child...but for a different reason the story was, perhaps... addressed to you, it may have interrupted the monotony of those malevolent feelings with which I fear you are, with too much pause, engrossed... I have a letter from John Greenwood... and he says not one word of the child!... We may justly therefore take it for granted that the child is safe... ". Folds, boldly penned and very good. $600-800
