15. HENRY CLINTON (1738 - 1795) English major general who succeeded Howe as commander in chief in North America, captured Charleston in 1780 and resigned his post following a quarrel with Cornwallis. Fine content war date L.S. 1p. legal folio, New York, Jan. 14, 1779 to Lord George Germain. Clinton writes in part noting that he was enclosing a letter (no longer present) that "...has been just now delivered to me by the Superintendent of the Port, by which it appears there is reason to apprehend, that an improper use has been made of the Indulgence granted to the Merchants by the Commissioners, in order to prevent the loss of British Merchandise, for which there was no demand here. As I may find it expedient to put a Stop to the Exportation of British Manufactures, I thought it proper to give your Lordship the earliest Information of this Matter..." Marked "Duplicate No. 39" at top left. Usual folds, very minor soiling, otherwise very good.$700-900
