17. HORATIO GATES (1728 - 1806) American Revolution Major General who with Arnold forced Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, he was later examined by Congress for his disastrous defeat at Camden. War date manuscript D.S. 2pp. legal folio, "Head Quarters" Providence, May 13, 1779 ordering to "Pay Robert Williams Esq. Pay Master to Lt. col. Wm. S. Smiths Regiment the Sum of four thousand eight hundred & twenty two Dollars & seventy seconds of a Dollar agreeable to the within Abstract for Pay and Subsistence for the months of October and November 1778..." On the verso is a folio sized abstract detailing the distribution of monies through the regiment. Signed by Capt. William North. Margins rough and chipped in certain areas, some toning, otherwise very good condition.$1,500-2,000
