39. WILLIAM NORTH (1755 - 1836) Revolutionary War officer who served under Benedict Arnold, aide-de-camp to Steuben, and was present at Cornwallis' surrender. Incidentally, the bulk of Steuben's estate was left to North. War-date A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Richmond, Dec. 18, 1780 to Lt. Col. Lewis Morris, Jr., an aide to Major Gen. Nathaniel Greene mentioning the despatch of letters to a Mr. Custis. In his postscript, North adds: "Duval has arrived here. I could [?] you a great deal of news - but I suppose Mr. Custis will give it to you..." Fine.$400-600
