53. (BERGEN COUNTY MILITIA MUSTER ROLL) Manuscript war date document, 1p. folio, [Bergen County, N.J.], June 5, [1777], a payroll for the militia company under the command of Capt. Abraham A. Haring (1734 - c.1780) who responded to "...an Alarm Invasion of the Enemy from [words missing]..." The roll lists a total of twenty five officers and men who each served five days and billed for a total of £13:10:8. The dates of service were between June 2 and June 5, but due to some losses to the paper, we do not know the year. However we do know that the Captain, Abraham A. Haring became a Captain in 1777 and was captured by the British between mid-1779 and the winter of 1780 and died in their custody in New York. A further indication that this was from a 1777 alarm comes from a letter from Washington wrote to John Sullivan written on June 1, 1777 in which he wrote: "...I wish you would use your endeavors to encourage the Militia between Brunswick and the Delaware, to be ready to Assemble and give their Assistance, provided the Enemy attempt to march thro' the Country, which they intend to do from all our late accounts..." Numerous folds, many weak, chipping with some losses to text, moderate soiling and a light dampstain, only fair condition. $200-300
