RAINS (1833-1862) Confederate brigadier general, entered the service as Colonel of the 11th Tenn., fought at Cumberland Gap and Murfreesboro where he was killed leading a charge against Union artillery emplacements. Excessively rare war-date A.E.S. "Approved, James E. Rains, Col. 11th Regt." penned in the upper-left corner of the document across the text, 1p. 4to., Cumberland Gap, Nov. 28, 1861 approving the discharge of Sgt. W.J.D. Spence of the 11th Tenn., discharged due to an "Organic disease of the Lungs". Fine condition, and a legendary rarity. $5,000-7,000
