CUSTER (1839 - 1876) Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the legendary battle of Little Big Horn. A.L.S. "G.A. Custer U.S.A.", 1p. 8vo., New York, Mar. 28, 1866 to Colonel John Batchelder, in part: "...I will not be able to keep my engagement with you tomorrow. I will call [?] at my earliest convenience, not later than next Tuesday morning..." A few letters in text slightly blurred, else fine.$4,000-5,000
