66. C.S.A. TREASURER TRENHOLM PAYS THE TROOPS A wonderful pair of related documents, comprising a partly printed warrant from the Confederacy authorizing $100,000 to be used for "Pay of the Army" with the actual check issuing the funds, both written in Richmond and dated November 28, 1864. The wonderfully illustrated check, printed by J.T. Paterson & Co., has a vignette of an allegorical maiden seated in front of a fortification flying the Confederate First National Flag. The words "Treasury of the Confederate States" are boldly printed along the top margin. On the checks left margin the word: "War" in large block letters indicates that these particular checks were issued exclusively for the use and benefit of the military. When it was placed into the Confederate Treasury files the check and voucher were attached to one another along their extreme left edges by a thin strip of adhesive, but they are otherwise in very good to fine condition. A search of the sales records of the major auction Houses found that several similarly attached combinations of checks and vouchers have been sold in the past, bringing between $1500 and $2000 each. However, none of these were issued on behalf of the War Department, leading to the possibility of this being a unique combination. Very good condition.
