69. JOHN SLIDELL (1793 - 1871) Confederate diplomat. While on a mission with James M. Mason to win support of France, he was arrested onboard the British steamer Trent by Federal forces, nearly causing Britain to enter the war on the side of the South. Rare war-date partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 4to., Paris, Jan 22, 1864, an exchange voucher partly filled out in Slidell's hand. The document notes the acceptance of Slidell's "...draft dated Frankfort 22 Jany 1864 for the sum of £841.11 sh...($4081.50) and have paid him therefor the sum of twenty thousand one hundred and Ninety six franc..." A pre-printed table at the bottom of the first page lists the amount in various currents including "Net proceeds in Confederate States currency." On the second page, Slidell has personally filled out the form which certifies that the draft was sold for "Salary to 31 Dec. 1863 dated Frankfort 22 Jan 1864" Usual folds, otherwise very good condition. $4,000-6,000
