70. JUDAH P. BENJAMIN (1811 - 1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. The only Jew in the Confederate Cabinet, he fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. Rare war-date manuscript D.S. 1p. 19" x 7", [Richmond], July 13, 1864 in which Benjamin approves the account of "Charles J. Helm, Commercial Agent at Havana, for Salary for Quarter ending 31 Dec 1863..." totaling $1,288.70 with $163.70 due to the Confederate States. Usual folds, otherwise fine condition. $2,000-3,000
