72. (JAMES M. MASON) (1798 - 1871) Confederate Congressman and commissioner to Great Britain and France. He and John Slidell were removed by Federal forces from a British ship nearly drawing Britain into the Civil War. Highly important and rare group of three partly printed documents being accounts of his pay as Commissioner at London from August, 1861 to November, 1863. The first piece, a partly printed D.S. 1p. oblong 4to., Treasury Department [Richmond], Jan. 21, 1864 lists four treasury warrants from 1862 and 1863 totalling $15,006.50 issued to James. M. Mason "for his Salary". The second piece, a partly printed D.S. 1p. folio, "Treasury Department, First Auditor's Office" [Richmond], Feb. 10, 1864 a "Statement of Account between James M. Mason, Commisoner at London and the Confederate States of America, from 24 August 1861 to 12 Nov 1863...on account of the appropriation for...`Salaries Commissioners, Secretaries,' &c..." noting four treasury warrants as well as amounts "advanced by W. J. Bromwell Dibursing Clerk Dept. of State..." totalling $26,633.33. The third document, a partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Treasury Department, [Richmond], Feb. 12, 1864 certifying the same accounts, noting that Mason was still owed $2,533.08. Three pieces, very good condition. $5,000-7,000
