81. JOHN C. BRECKENRIDGE (1821 - 1875) Vice President of the United States who was second to Lincoln in the 1860 elections. He then became a Confederate major general who won the battle of New Market. Rare war-date A.L.S. "John C. Breckinridge", 1p. 4to., [Virginia], Apr. 16, 1864 to Rev. John Miller in Petersburg. In part: "...I was absent when your apostolic warning came...in regard to supplies for the poor for Petersburg. I would say `Peccavi' ["I have sinned"] but for instructiuons from Richmond, and the highly respectable declaration that whoso provideth not for his own household is worse than an ifidel. I knew that I would be held accountable for the ability of my troops to move. The difficulty however I believe has been removed..." At the time, Grant's forces were slowly closing-in on Petersburg, and supplies for the population were no doubt growing tight. A few stray stains, de-accession stamp at top, else very good. $700-900
