HOWELL COBB (1815 - 1868) Confederate major general who originally urged loyalty to the Union, but upon Lincoln's election obtained a Confederate commission and led forces at Antietam and in Georgia. Rare war-date D.S. signed twice "Howell Cobb Maj. Genl", 1p. 4to., Atlanta, Mar. 5, 1864, an order to make payment to Cobb reimbursing him for the cost of quarters for him and his staff. Slight toning, else very good. $300-400
