100. WADE HAMPTON Great content A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Oct. 24, 1865. With the war over and the slaves freed, Wade Hampton confronts a new reality. He writes to an unnamed general: "General, Having been informed yesterday that some Negro had lodged a complaint in your office against me. I wish to ask that the officer who goes down to Mrs. Singleton [illeg.] may be directed to call in my overseer to investigate the matter. My place adjoins Mrs. Singletons & Mr. Chappell, My overseer can give all necessary explanations..." Usual folds, light soiling, otherwise very good condition. $600-800
