102. WILLIAM J. HARDEE (1815-1873) Confederate lieutenant general who led his corps at Shiloh and Atlanta, and attempted to halt Sherman's March to the Sea. Rare good content war-date A.L.S "W.J. Hardee", 2pp. 8vo., "Hd. Qrs." June 1, 1864 in dark pencil to "My Dear Habby". Hardee apparently sends a valued slave servant home for treatment, writing in part: "...I sent Syd to you yesterday. He was quite sick while he left here, but the Doctor did not think his attack serious. I hope by your tender nursing that he will soon be well. Cure him as soon as possible and send him back. He is a great use to me. Mary gives ma a good account of you, and I feel that she has a friend in whom she can always rely. I write in haste. Inform me of Syd's condition..." Very good. At the time, Hardee was facing imminent attack by Sherman's army in the area of Lost Mountain, Georgia. $750-1,000
