104. AMBROSE P. HILL (1825-1865) Confederate lieutenant general who led Hill's Light Division through the battles of cedar Mountain, Antietam and Chancellorsville, led the III Corps at gettysburg, killed in the final defense of Petersburg. Exceedingly rare pair of war-date endorsements on the recto of a letter from 2nd Sgt. Andrew J. Hunter of the 11th N.C.writing from the headquarters of the 3rd Army Corps at Petersburg, va., Nov. 12, 1864. Hunter writes a sergeant, in part: "...I guess you have heard of the recent fight of the 27th of last month at Burgess Mills in which macRae's Brigade was engaged and suffered severely in prisoners. And Genl. A ___ is sorry to inform you that your whole staff was captuured except Lieut. Bob Taylor...Poor Gus is in the ranks and I pity him..." When the letter is turned ninety degrees to the right, there is a signed endorsement by Hill reading: "Hd. Qrs. 3d Army Corps Respectfully Approved and forward By Order of A.P. Hill Lieut Genl". The endorsement was written-over by Huunter when he wrote his letter. At the right corner, unaffected by any text, Hill wrote; "A.P. Hill Lieut gen." Surprisingly, this was a piece of scrap paper removed by Hunter from an official document which had been endorsed twice by Hill, and with paper rare in the Confederracy at this time, Hunter tore-off the endorsed page and used it to write to his friend! Some light staining and soil, overall very good. A great rarity!$3,000-4,000
