106. JOHN BELL HOOD (1831-1879) Confederate Lieutenent General who led the "Texas Brigade" at Second Bull Run and Antietam, and under Longstreet Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga, where he lost a limb. Rare war-date A.L.S. "Hood", `Hdqrs", Apr. 12, 1863, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], in pencil, in full: "Dear Johnston So soon as this little affair is over, I will write to [Louis T.] Wigfall, and sincerely hope you will receive the appointment you desire. You wish to command the East in N[orth]. C[arolina]. not Brigaded. I will aid you with great pleasure all that I can. Very truly yours, in great haste, Hood". Light but entirely legible, with some soiling, still good condition. We can only deduce that Hood was writing to Major Gen. Joseph Johnston, at that time quite unsatisfied with his position as commander of the Department of the West and in conflict with Pemberton and Davis. Johnston would indeed see the Carolinas, but not until 1865, as he retreated before Sherman's onslaught. $1,500-2,000
