Rare good content war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., "Santa Rosa Island, Camp Brown", Sep. 8, 1861 to Gen. EGBERT L. VIELE (1825-1902) Union brigadier general who took Norfolk and later served as Military Governor of the city. In part: "...With pleasure I read in the paper of your appointment as Brigadier General. Here we are cut up an ddivided on this lone and dreary island-three of my companies are at Fort Jefferson...infantry drills and artillery practice...my regiment [is] a good and effective regiment in a campaign-and fight...I have been building field works...I sometimes think there will be no fight here....I would like to be under your command..."
