122. ELISHA F. PAXTON (1828 - 1863) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Stonewall Brigade, Paxton served with Jackson at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where he, like Jackson, was mortally wounded. An exceptionally rare and lengthy war date A.E.S. on a 2pp. folio Court Marshall Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia, August 18, 1862, ordering that two men of the 31st Va. be executed by firing squad on the following day. At the end of the document's listing of the proceedings Paxton has written the following five line endorsement: "The Foregoing proceedings and sentence are approved and the brigade commander will cause the sentence of the court to be executed on Tuesday the 19th of August 1862 at 5 o'clock P.M. . By command of Major General Jackson, E.F. Paxton, A.A.A. General.". While Paxton's autograph is exceedingly rare in any form, this is the only war date example that we have encountered. The document bearing Paxton's endorsement is moderately soiled and bears intermittent spots of heavy foxing. These are largely in areas away from Paxton's endorsement, and could be greatly lessened by a conservator, or even matted out entirely if one chose to display only Paxton's endorsement. Paxton is rarely encountered, and if the past is a fair indicator of relative rarity, it may well be a number of years before another war dated example enters the market.$1,000-1,500
