126. PLEADING FOR WHISKEY A somewhat humorous war-date, ink inscribed, Union A.L.S. "A.W. Alvord", as captain 109th N.Y. Vols., Camp Austin, Va., Oct. 24, 1863, written to the adjutant concerning a strong desire for whiskey, and the very comical endorsement he received in return, in part: "...if you have the means of sending us some whiskey, for the sake of God & humanity send it. Our men are obliged to be out a great deal & have no fire to warm or dry themselves with...let me call your attention to the fact that the health of our men is a great item to be looked to...". An eleven-line response by Adjutant Jewett on the verso, reads, in full: "The enclosed touching appeal was forwarded to me this morning. I forward it to you thinking perhaps you can in some degree relieve the gallant captain of his agony. Get a half dozen handkerchiefs and send it `Ye that have tears to shed. Prepare to shed them now". Quite unique!$400-600
