129. JOHN H. REAGAN (1818-1905) Confederate Postmaster General devoted to Jefferson Davis and later imprisoned with him. Fine content war date L.S. on Confederate States of America Post Office Department letterhead, 2pp. 4to, Richmond, Nov. 2, 1863 to Comptroller Lewis Cruger noting that "...Mr. S.F. Zantizinger was never appointed by this Department to any duty connected with Military Telegraph lines. And no such appointments were made by the President. He confided the execution of the laws relating to telegraphing to this Department. I was informed Mr. Zantzinger acted as Superintendent of military telegraph lines under the order or authority of General Bragg, in his Military department. And the telegraph line from Selma to Menoran seems to have been built under orders from the Military Authorities. I had endeavored... when this line was built, to get Mr. Zantzinger and others acting under Military authority in building and operating military lines... to act under my authority.... I could not authorize the payment of his account... it must be out of some appropriation for the use of the Army..." Usual folds, small tear at bottom margin, otherwise very good.$800-1,200
