158. C.S.S. GEORGIA. A rare pair of partly printed documents related to the Confederate States Steamer Georgia. The first, a 1p. oblong 8vo., "On board the Confederate States Steamer `Georgia'", Dec. 1, 1864, a "Monthly Return of Deaths" listing two individuals including James L. Radden who died of Pneumonia on Nov. 15, 1864 and J. A. Yates who died of "Hyrops Pericardii" on the same day. The document also lists the pay owned the sailors at the time of death. The second document is of the same size, place and date but is a "Monthly Return of Transfers" noting the transfer of Augustus L. Bradley to the "C.S.Stm `Water Witch'". Each document has been signed by Lt. W. Grantherny, the commander of the C.S.S. Georgia. Several vessels in Confederate service were named after the State of Georgia, but this ship is positively identified by the name of its commanding officer. Three weeks after this form was completed, on December 21, 1864, the approach of Sherman's Armies with its corresponding naval support compelled the crew of the Georgia to scuttle her. Light wrinkles and folds, otherwise very good.2,000-3,000
