161. CONFEDERATE MARINE CORPS HIRES SLAVES Unusual manuscript D.S. 1p. 8vo, Richmond, June 4, 1862, in which Lt. John D. Fowler, acting as agent for the Confederate Marine Corps hires a slave named "Reuben" for twenty dollars per month, "provided Mr. Sizer [of the Confederate Commissary] does not object to the contract". Light glue stains on verso, otherwise very good. Together with a partly printed D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Jan. 1, 1863, a receipt for the same Mr. Sizer for the "...hire of two Negro Slaves named Mary and her [words missing] Cornelius. The said slaves to be well treated in all respects, and well clothed..." Left margin torn with some loss to text, chipped at top margin, light soiling, otherwise very good. Throughout the War the Confederate Marine Corps never had an operational strength of more than a few hundred men, and documents directly relating to the Confederate Marines are scarce indeed. Two pieces. $700-900
