162. CSS MERRIMAC RELIC A terrific relic of the CSS Merrimac, the armored warship which battled the USS Monitor to a draw at Hampton Roads, Virginia, on March 8, 1862, namely 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" bronze section of the vessel's whistle with period identifying tag attached. The tag reads: "Piece of the whistle of the Rebel Ram Merrimac sunk by the U.S. Monitor Ericsson". The tag is attached to the relic with a length of closely-wrapped brown period thread. A fine relic, worthy of display. $700-900
