168. GETTYSBURG CASUALTY WITH VOLUNTEER BUDDY Rare, ca. 1861 1/6th plate ambrotype of volunteer buddies Freeman I. Green and Gilbert H. Rogers of the 86th New York Vols. Both gentlemen wear the early 1861 New York state issue shell jacket with the soldier, on the right, who is most likely Green wearing a belt with a revolver and bowie knife attached. Each would die during the war with Green dying of disease Mar. 30, 1862, and Rogers dying of the same fate on Nov. 25, 1863, but not before he had been in the battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. He was wounded in the leg, July 2, 1862 while fighting with his regiment near Devil's Den. While recovering from his wound he died in the hospital, thereby making him one of the many soldiers who died as result of the famous battle. A period pencil inscription on the inside of the case reads: "Freeman I. Green, Richard H. Rogers, Hornby". Extensive research approves that Richard H. Rogers was mistakenly misidentified during the inscription, and can only be Gilbert H. Rogers as there was no Richard H. Rogers from New York, and of the four Richard Rogers none could have possibly posed with Green as he died before they were mustered into service. Rogers' National Archives service records accompany the lot. Housed in a half leatherette case with a stamped brass mat, frame, and protective glass. Some very light scratches affect the emulsion, else very good.$800-1,000
