170. GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN PROPERTY DAMAGE CLAIM A very unusual war-date 3pp. long folio legal document, Washington County, Md., Oct. 20, 1863 attesting to damage caused by Union troops as they pursued Lee after the battle of Gettysburg reading, in very small part; "...Jacob Richard...for property destroyed and damaged by a portion of the Army of the Potomac said to be Gen'l. Slocum's Corps on his farm near Jones Cross Roads...on the 11th to the 14th...July 1863...". An itemized list follows listing a dozen different forms of damage suffered by Richard's farm during the army's occupation. The damages range from trampled fields, and destroyed fences; to lost crops, and ruined orchards. His most interesting (and perhaps most unpatriotic) claim is for $474.00 for "Damage by intrenchments." Overall, Richard is seeking over twenty-five hundred dollars from the Federal government. The main focus of the document is to legally prove that he is a loyal citizen of the United States with sworn testimony, and signatures to make their case. Some fold splits, and soiling, else very good.
