172. (MILITARY CADET'S PAROLE) Excessively rare partly-printed Confederate parole, 1p. oblong 8vo., headed "Head-Quarters Cavalry Corps, M.D.M.", Milledgeville, May 16, 1865, obviously printed on a field press and issued to: "...John H. Furman a Cadet of the Hillsboro Regiment of Military Academy N.C...." who swear not to take up arms against the United States until exchanged, signed by Furman at center-right, also signed by a captain and assistant provost marshal, and by "Brevet Maj. Gen. WILSON" in type. Some foxing, folds, else boldly penned (by Furman himself!) and very good. The Hillsboro Military Academy cadets were used at the very end of the war to guard prisoners, mainly in the area of Raleigh, and were involved in transferring Union prisoners from Salisbury to Goldsboro for exchange. As Joseph Johnston's army retreated through the area, the cadets were ordered back to their academy where they were disbanded a few days before Johnston's surrender. This is the first such military cadet's discharge we have seen, and as there were only two hundred cadets at Hillsboro, this is undoubtedly one of the rarest paroles obtainable. $1,000-1,500
