174. (CIVIL WAR RECRUITING BROADSIDE) A great war-date recruiting broadside, 1p. 12" x 20", circa 1862, with a nicely printed spread winged eagle in the center of the heading: UNITED STATES ARMY, RECRUITING SERVICE, calling for the service of "...able-bodied unmarried men between the ages of 18 and 35 years...a minor will not be enlisted...the term of service...previous to January 1st, 1863 is THREE YEARS...by good conduct and attention...a soldier will certainly rise to the position of a non-commissioned officer...". To induce potential recruits to enlist there is a very detailed pay scale for non-commissioned officers and privates while noting, "...in addition to the pay...one ration per day and an abundant supply of good clothing is allowed to every soldier...". Most certainly printed in late summer 1862 when Lincoln called for 300,000 men to help put down the rebellion, and although not signed, no doubt used by some recruiting officer to entice many young men to enlist. Folds with some minor toning, otherwise very good. $1,000-1,200
