176. (ANTI-JEFFERSON DAVIS BUSINESS CARD) A wonderful tongue-in-cheek war-date Anti-Confederacy business card, most likely printed and circulated in Maryland, proclaiming, in full: "Fer Salt River! THE Fast-sailing scow `SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY,' Jeff Davis, Captain, is now in good running order, and prepared to carry any quantity of passengers to `the other side of Jordan.' All persons dissatisfied with the tyranny, oppression, and corruption of the United States, are invited to embark on this scow for the above destination. Fare, very low indeed. Purser, Honest Floyd [because former Sec. of War John B. Floyd orchestrated the transfer of fire arms from US armories to Southern arsenals while he serving in Buchanan's cabinet]. J. DAVIS, CAPT. Reference-The Maryland Legislature." No doubt printed in early 1861, since anti-Jeff Davis propaganda of this nature was widely printed and circulated throughout the north until the war became a serious and bloody affair in 1862.
