203. HORACE GREELEY (1811 - 1872) American journalist and founder of the New York Tribune which advocated abolition, and universal amnesty and suffrage. Greeley also posted bail for Jefferson Davis. Fine content A.L.S. 1p. 4to., "Tribune Office" [New York], Mar, 18, 1844 to Senator John C. Calhoun noting that "I learn from Mr. Bacon that you would like to hear me make a plain talk on the tariff in Plymouth before Election. I very much regret that the illness of my wife will prevent my accepting your kind offer... Hoping that I shall be able to do you some good through Tribune, and with a lively trust that the result in your State will be auspicious..." Usual folds, otherwise very good condition.$300-400
