207. OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, FATHER AND SON A terrific association of a famous father and son on a single item! We offer an A.L.S. of OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (1809 - 1894) American man of letters; a poet, novelist and doctor who wrote The Poet at the Breakfast-Table and Old Ironsides, 1p. 8vo., Beverly Farms, July 9, 1885, in part: "... I am much obliged to you for your polite offer. If you mail the paper to this place... where there is a post office, I shall get it... " At bottom, the letter is boldly signed by Father Holmes, and authenticated by his son OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, JR. (1841 - 1935) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1902-1932) known for his vigorous opinions, often in dissent, a narrow constructionist and advocate of legislative prerogative, promulgator of the "clear and present danger" test for freedom of speech. He writes: "January 15/1929 There is no doubt that this letter was written by my father. Oliver Wendell Holmes. Washington D.C.". Fine. $600-800
