213. (CHARLESTON SLAVE TAG) A rare fine condition bronze Charleston slave tag, approx. 1 3/4" x 1 3/4", engraved "CHARLESTON 73 SERVANT 1856", with a small hole through which a leather lace was once threaded. By law, slaves in Charleston were obliged to be registered for purposes of taxation, with their profession and registry number to be stated on the tag. Our example was obtained directly from a Charleston digger, and is in very good condition with clear devises and a low tax number. $1,500-2,000
