219.* GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Good content war-date L.S. "Go: Washington", 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters New Windsor" [New York], Apr. 21, 1781 to an unamed recipient asking that he mail one of Washington's letters. In full: "Sir You will oblige me by putting the inclosed into the Mail which I think will leave Hartford on Monday next. I am with very great regard Dear Sir Your most obt. and hble servt. Because New York City was at this time held by the British, Washington was obliged to use a mail route across Connecticut, Long Island Sound and Long Island to communicate with points south of the state. Washington remained in the north for several months more, collecting intelligence about the enemy and determining his next course of action. A very small marginal chip close to signature at lower right repaired with period paper, otherwise very good to fine condition. Matted in green with an engraving, framed. Ex Sen. Paul Simon Collection. $8,000-10,000
