221.* JOHN ADAMS (1735 - 1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. He later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Rare A.D.S. "John Adams" 1p. 7 1/2" x 2 1/2", Boston Mar. 21, 1770, a promissory note "...to pay Mr. Edmund Soper or order Sixty Eight Pounds Fifteen Shillings, and Eight Pence, lawfull Money on Demand..." On the verso Roper notes that he received the next day "...of John Adams Fifty Pounds Four Shillings and Six Pence lawfully money in Part of the within Note....". Signed less than three weeks after the Boston Massacre. Ironically Adams would appear in court that Autumn as the attorney for the British soldiers involved in the incident. Minor clean fold splits repaired on verso, small loss and glue stain at top center affecting a few words, otherwise very good condition. Matted in green velvet with an engraving and framed. Ex Sen.
