223. THOMAS JEFFERSON (1743-1826) Third President of the United States, author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, ceased the importation of slaves to America. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Aug. 20, 1806, a four-language ship's paper issued to the schooner Remittance for a voyage from Savannah to St. Croix, laden with a cargo of "Tobacco, Nails & Lumber". Nicely signed by Jefferson, and by Secretary of State and future President JAMES MADISON. Fold splits archivally repaired on verso, tiny loss at one fold affects nothing, otherwise very good condition. $4,000-5,000
