227. JAMES MONROE (1758 - 1831) Fifth President of the United States who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and promulgated the Monroe Doctrine. A.L.S. "Jas. Monroe" as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 23, 1817 to attorney Joseph Galt, in part: "...I return you the paper which you handed to me yesterday with some slight alterations only. It goes fully to the object, and in sufficient detail. The acct. of my state of health is omitted lest it might be inferred that it is not so good as it usually is, for God be thanked, I am tolerably well..."
