554. JANIS JOPLIN Rare A.L.S. "J" with holograph transmittal envelope signed "Miss Janis Joplin", 4p. 8vo., [Port Arthur, Texas, Sep. 30, 1965] to her lover, Peter De Blanc in New York. This fine letter was penned just months before Joplin's career took off. At this time, she was living at home with her parents, hoping to rebuild her life and recover from her drug abuse of the previous few years. During that time she sang in small venues in New York and San Francisco, where she first met De Blanc. Shortly after this letter was written, Joplin moved to Austin and then to San Francisco where she joined Big Brother & the Holding Company. In a very legible, clear hand, she writes in part: "...I, personally, am glad that you don't have to be surrounded by hassles all the time...I got my money today! $258.00!!...I'm glad we didn't get it when we needed it because we were fucked up then & would have been fucked up w/money...these are my temporary plans: I'll pay my doctor bills, buy yarn for your sweater...I desperately want a guitar & still do, but the family thinks I should buy some necessities w/it for when we get married...I can't really do my hope chest buying well if I blow half of the money on a guitar...I'll be coming to you guitarless..." Janis adds a long list of household necessities she hopes to buy for "our place", noting: "...I don't want to seem a `things' craver. But these are just some of the things I want to bring to our marriage, you know?...No guitar, though....Well, hell, I guess if I had Janice & Edward living with me, I'd want to move too...Sound like a real bitch, don't I?..." Two pieces, the letter in fine condition, the envelope bearing an opening tear affecting the top half of the "J" in her first name.$2,500-3,500
