W. S. Rosecrans Cabinet Card Signed To Civil War Vet
WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS, Union Civil War General, Register of the U. S. Treasury, whose Signature appears on U. S. Currency, Congressman from California.
c.1885, Portrait Cabinet Card, Signed "W. S. Rosecrans" on back, 6.5" x 4.25", Choice Extremely Fine. The autograph inscription on the back of this photograph reads: "To Comrade J. C. Stevenson New Castle Pa. from W. S. Rosecrans Bvt. Maj. Genl. U.S.A." Also on the back is an ornate advertisement for Rice photographic studio, located in Washington, DC, four blocks from the White House. The Rice name and address is also stamped in gold on the front, below the portrait of Rosecrans, who is wearing civilian attire with two lapel pins. There are traces of a previous mounting along the top edge of the back, otherwise this card is in choice condition. This photo card is certain to appeal to Autograph Collectors and Currency Collectors.
William Starke Rosecrans (1819-1898) was a Union Major General who headed the Army of the Cumberland to gain a hard-won victory at Murfreesboro, only to be thoroughly defeated by Confederate forces under Gen. Longstreet at Chickamauga (September 1863). Relieved of his command, Rosecrans for a time directed operations in Missouri. After resigning from the army in 1867, he became U. S. Minister to Mexico (1868–1869), Congressman from California (1881–1885), and Register of the United States Treasury (1885–1893). J. C. Stevenson was a Civil War veteran from Pennsylvania and author of at least one Civil War Regimental History. He was one of the organizers of the 100th Pennsylvania Regiment (Roundheads) veterans group, and was secretary of the organization until his death, sometime before 1924.
